they just don't match- one is as if it is almost night and the other is lit as if it were mid-day

ok... im not sure if you have put a filter over the trees or if they are a very low resolution. Masking needs a bit of work, if you look around the rocks, you can see the line where the next image ends. Also the rocks look like they have been duplicated but moved slightly which is giving them a blurred look. Your snow looks very dull compared to the lighting of the water and the bear... You idea is good, just need to clean it up a little bit, take your time cause you still have a couple of days and trees are the pits, i can spend hours cutting one out

Looks good, maybe add a shadow under the cottage, and maybe make the snow a little bigger. it's very nice otherwise. Good luck!
