The bullet needs to be much closer to the diameter of the barrel...slight motion trail would be good, too...

This is a great idea! I think some improvement is in order though. There are some fantastic smoke brushes available that would help the realism and the bullet could use some motion trail. brilliant idea but you could have done a much better job with the smoke and some motion blur on the bullet
