And the practice of MEMENTO MORI, where back in the days of the first cameras (Photography was very expensive) families would take on the expense only when a loved one died and took a photo of them propped up as if still alive.. (even to resorting to painting open eyes over the eyelids of the photograph.)

Author, I saw something like that at Google (or Flickr, I can't remember clearly). They used to dress the deceased up and did the makeup... A bit wierd and maniac if it's nowadays!
I know Erica, when I read about it, it really gave me the creeps but I suppose they did painting of dead people as well, still pretty spookie
