sword has thickness so the holes should show some of the inside of the sword not just be masked out. you could try using the pen tool to outline the hole and then add a line to the path with a bit of adjusting the colour you could give the impression of depth to the holes
I agree with your comment Alan. Thanks for the suggestion. I know it's basically a beginner's attempt at a chop. If I have time and can figure out if/how I can do it I will.
