René Magritte created the original La Grande Famille (The Grand Family) in 1963. This was just a few years before the artist’s death and so this serene and surreal oil painting represents his most developed works of art. Magritte has created the image of the Dove above the sea and while the wave looks as if it is crashing upon the shore we cannot be certain – As Magritte said, his images ‘conceal nothing’.
