The ants are all the same size, even though the landscape shows depth and distance. It gives this a really "cut and paste" effect, and doesn't look very alien, so much as ants walking around on a photo.

Perhaps varying the size and skewing the ants a bit, and adding a space ship into the image?

Interesting concept, but this is too dark. Use the image in step 7 with a lighter background to make this easier to look at.
