I like the blend very much...perhaps try and darken the right ear just a bit to match the lighting on his arm...this will also help it have variance from the other ear a bit. Make sense?

The only thing that doesn't blend are the ears. I think darkening them would have helped.

This made me smile...perhaps you could darken the ear just below the right (lower) part of hat...have it continue the shadowy look.
