1. The original photo is mine and it is in SBS for you to see.
2. The background textured layer was taken from Filter Forge "textures" I then blurred it, darkened it and oil painted it.
3. There is an oil paint filter on the man....then a black layer applied and painted out and desaturated.
4. Gradient in black applied and sandstone texture. (5 years and 552 days ago)

Anglica, you know how I struggle with anything layers and photoshop. It's thanks to you that I know what I know, which isn't much since I'm always forgetting what you have taught me...when I get home (we are flying back in a couple of hours from Kuala Lumpur)...I'm going to really get into photoshopping. Thank you for all your help over the years. I was blown away that this came in second! BWR also has offered to help me along the way....how can I resist?

1. My own photo and it is in sbs for you.
2. Texture effect is in default in PS patterns section.
3. Painted out the background, after the patterns I added a black layer and painted him out.
4. Desaturated.
5. Used oil filter but brought it down considerably.
6. I added a texture (sandstone) but brought it down too. (5 years and 553 days ago)

The work is good. The oil paint filter looks great on the hair and sack but I think it needs masking out on the skin unless you like the swirly texture effect on the skin? I would do another layer and change the oil paint settings to make the skin smoother. You can do that by turning the shine all the way to 0 and turn the cleanliness up. Then mask out everything except the skin. That way you get different oil paint effects on different parts of the portrait. However, in the end, you need to make it the way you like it.

author says:

That is good advice and I will try it later today. THANK YOU Angelica.

The portrait needs to be 17th century style, not modern.

1. Original is my photo and is attached.
2. I used Buzz Sim filter on "SOFT" for a bit of a painterly effect.
3. Painted out the background then did a black overlay and painted the young monk out.
4. I desaturated by -19%
5. I did not use a texturizer (canvas, sandstone etc.) Do you think I ought to have?
Thank you for all your help. (5 years and 554 days ago)

1. Original is my photo and is attached in SBS
2. Removed background
3. sepia-ed the woman
4. added a brown background
5. added craquelere and blended it into the portrait (5 years and 554 days ago)

author says:

Bahhhhhhhhhhhhh looks horrible....please view in hig res.

avatar BWR
BWR says:

You have to make that bigger. It is 475 X 484px which is way too small. Images can be up to 3500X3500. We need to see the detail in your Photoshop and even at "Hi-Res" we can't.

author says:

Dear BMW....how do I do that....just take my photo into photoshop and enlarge it? I dunnno this side of pyxleyes is so challenging. Thank you.

How many megapixels is your camera or are you scanning film?

Nice job removing the background. The "high res" is smaller than posted picture though.

BWR says:

Perhaps it's not. I believe the web page resizes the preview image to 954px wide, which will auto-resize the vertical dimension.

Thank you....I need all the help I can get. How do I make this larger...will wait until you guys advise before I change it.

I did it but it still looks lousy, so I put up another one that had more pixels in it. Thank you

Nice work removing the string on the man's arm!
My only suggestion would be to try and soften the edges of the sack. Try a soft brush and the blur tool.
Good luck.

author says:

Thank you ....I will try that ............tomorrow!
