1. The original photo is mine and it is in SBS for you to see.
2. The background textured layer was taken from Filter Forge "textures" I then blurred it, darkened it and oil painted it.
3. There is an oil paint filter on the man....then a black layer applied and painted out and desaturated.
4. Gradient in black applied and sandstone texture. (5 years and 585 days ago)

Anglica, you know how I struggle with anything layers and photoshop. It's thanks to you that I know what I know, which isn't much since I'm always forgetting what you have taught me...when I get home (we are flying back in a couple of hours from Kuala Lumpur)...I'm going to really get into photoshopping. Thank you for all your help over the years. I was blown away that this came in second! BWR also has offered to help me along the way....how can I resist?

So, this is what a professional work of art is supposed to look like...my creations really tell me that I need to polish and learn and you are a marvelous teacher. Thank you for WoWing us with this beautiful piece, it is a winner. I am going to refer to your notes, which I appreciate oh so much, many many times. THANK YOU.

ha ha ha ha....I just voted and see it is YOU! I thought you were busy pouring paint. You are one great teacher.

author says:

Thanks Olga. I am still pouring real paint too. I just decided to do a digital finger painting while I wait for some real paint to dry. No drying time with digital work.

Beautiful effect of painting but there is one thing that upsets me: it is the position of the shadow, I would have personally put it to the right of the portrait because we see some light coming from the left.

author says:

I appreciate what you are saying Denlig but if you look at the original photo you will see the shadow and lighting is in the same position as what I painted.
The light on the photo is obviously coming from more than one direction, hence the main shadow on the left.
Thank you very much for taking time to comment.

1. My own photo and it is in sbs for you.
2. Texture effect is in default in PS patterns section.
3. Painted out the background, after the patterns I added a black layer and painted him out.
4. Desaturated.
5. Used oil filter but brought it down considerably.
6. I added a texture (sandstone) but brought it down too. (5 years and 586 days ago)

The work is good. The oil paint filter looks great on the hair and sack but I think it needs masking out on the skin unless you like the swirly texture effect on the skin? I would do another layer and change the oil paint settings to make the skin smoother. You can do that by turning the shine all the way to 0 and turn the cleanliness up. Then mask out everything except the skin. That way you get different oil paint effects on different parts of the portrait. However, in the end, you need to make it the way you like it.

author says:

That is good advice and I will try it later today. THANK YOU Angelica.

The portrait needs to be 17th century style, not modern.

1. Original is my photo and is attached.
2. I used Buzz Sim filter on "SOFT" for a bit of a painterly effect.
3. Painted out the background then did a black overlay and painted the young monk out.
4. I desaturated by -19%
5. I did not use a texturizer (canvas, sandstone etc.) Do you think I ought to have?
Thank you for all your help. (5 years and 588 days ago)
