Where did the face come from? There is no source listed, and if it's painted, please show a couple of steps.

Edit: ok, cool.

author says:

Sorry Pearlie, but the source is up now, it takes a few minutes ...... and its a photo of a mask....not a painting or a rendering.....was the only decent pic of a mad scientist i could find

author says:

Pic looks better in high res

avatar arca
arca says:

Definitely works in hi res ... I agree with you author! Love the concept and I think there is a great story here ... I would hate to have him rolling down the tracks after me! I can just imagine a girl tied to the tracks in front of him ... anyone ever heard about The Perils of Pauline!

Damn......53.9% score??????
What an insult.
That seems a bit low....this piece wasnt the best in the contest, but deserved a better score than that..

avatar MossyB
MossyB says:

Quote:
"...this piece wasnt the best in the contest, but deserved a better score than that."

By what standards? Every piece ranking better than yours showed much more effort, transforming the source image, while your entry basically just masked off portions and added a face and some lights. Technically it was sound work, but aesthetically you didn't alter the image all that spectacularly to rank much more than "average," which at 50%, is pretty much where you landed after 841 votes.

Perhaps if you had put your "scientist" in more of an environment, say of a laboratory, or a hidden workshop, your concept would have read better and you would have gotten a better score. But for what you did, compared to all the other entries, I think you ranked correctly in this contest.

Don't let your hubris control you. It won't help here. To rank high, you have to show more than just good chop skills, you need your concepts to show good imagination as well.

author says:

Mossy B........No need to tell me how to rank high...i am an old timer here and used to be in the top 10 choppers at the old PST.
The problem is the voting system....people vote without understand what goes into the picture and i just dont have time to make a 10 step guide.

The concept in this pic was good and it should of scored higher.
53 % is an insult
Nothing to do with my Hubris controlling me.

It could use some sort of handles or steering wheel or something - to make moving it a bit more practical. Very neat idea, as a fan of cyber- and steampunk I've already got some ideas what to use it for ,-)

avatar langstrum
langstrum says:

Very nice construction and quite convincing. I suggest to make the upper part of the "fan" (I don't know how to call it properly in English) brighter then the lower part, because the light reflections on the aircraft is quite strong on other part. Also, blurring the background a bit more will work better for the DOF. One remaining problem is now I know you and for some reason I'm sure it's your work, but you still need the SBS to prove your authority and follow the specific requirement of this contest. Good luck

EDIT: Very nice SBS (even though it should be called the construction guideline ). Hope you'll get a top 3 place with this work

author says:

Thank you very much langstrum for the feedback

I will do the SBS and what you have suggested tonight , thanks again and keep the good feedback coming!

avatar DanLundberg

Very cool! I like that the source is still discernible and I love the extra detail of the wallpaper. It seems to me the struts connecting the axles to the fender would cast more shadow onto the wheel hubs. Adding to erikuri's handle-shadow observation, the uniform shadows for the three wall-side steam pipes in the back seem inconsistent with the pipes' varying distances from the wall.

Steampunk factory - created by langstrum

Plot: Emil was an orphan after she was born. At the age of 6, a strange man told her that she was inherited a factory that her father established. He was a great inventor who loved steampunk machines. It took him 10 years to build up this factory and all the machines were made by himself. His wife was died after gave birth to Emil and then he disappeared. Emil went to the factory and was really surprised when she saw the world that her father created. No one knows that he also made a time machine, and it was kept somewhere in the factory. Emil found the Octopus ship and the records of her father introducing how to use his machines. She learned them everyday to control this factory and one day, the secret revealed...
I found these sources by the key words "STEAMPUNK MACHINE" and you can see the result in the SBS. If you want to verify, just go to Flickr, type these words, choose the advanced search: only photo, creative commons, can be adapted or modified. I used high resolution monitor, so I can get 60 photos on the first page.

I spent the whole weekend just for making this image with many many hours cleaning out the background of the source images. Finally I'm quite satisfied with that result, maybe the best that I've made. Please view in Hi-Res, thanks everyone.

author says:

Thank you all to your comments, especially beaneze, that's my great pleasure to received your comment. @Ressiv: thank you for your suggestion but I don't agree with that, because in fact I made the shadow for the girl and you can clearly see in the Hi-Res. The light is vertical so her shadow should be small and around her foot. Making her glowing is my intense, she's wearing the illuminated clothes and the light makes her bright, this factor also reduces the intensity of her shadow. I tried to increase the shadow a bit but it stands out like a black area in the center of the image, not suitable, so I decide to keep the original state.

avatar genuine2009

the best,,,,,,as always!!!!!!!

avatar Ressiv
Ressiv says:

I meant shadow on herself Not under. If she is supposed to glow you could create a glow around her. But it's just a minor thing in a very nice total image. Good luck!

avatar Chalty669
Chalty669 says:

Very nice indeed! Only a couple of nitpicks, the compartment door of the octopus. At that distance would it be in front or behind the guy? There are a couple of holes on the contraption mounted to the octopus behind the girl which you missed. I would also have to agree that the girls brightness distracts from the fluentness of the whole picture. Having said that, this is a really nice piece which will surely go to the favs. Congratulations and keep them coming.

edit: much better!

Thank you my friends for you comments and suggestions. I' ll change something according to your suggestions, honestly it made me exhausted just after extracting the elements, so many details to deal with. @Chad: it's above the head of the robot, but it's transparent @elficho: oops, it's really a shame to me, how silly I am, I fixed them, thank you so much.
