VERY NICE IDEA... but... watch your Focus. In this picture I would have stepped back and made sure the bottom part was in focus and maybe some of the stem if not all and then cropped it this way. I'm sure there are better ways of getting that but that's all I can think of right now

Did you use a filter on this? It's pretty but not allowed in photography contests.

I know I mention this a lot but for macro photography I feel it's a must! If you were to run this through a grain/noise reducer thingy it would IMO make this shot that much better! It's such a beautiful shot but the grain takes away from it.

Just a little tip but Dark bugs need a flash with HIGH f-stop to not wash them out but to bring out their focal points.
Can I ask you what a "Mayfly" is or is that just the name you gave it? I've never seen this kinda bug but I might be from a different part of the US or world than you. Love to see new creatures

I have to say... in my experience of shooting these guys/gals, it's NOT easy! They IMO have the hardest eyes to shoot but you have done a great job on this!

I agree with you adenicyprus and I didn't think about that. BUT. in this shot I see that the noise can be done and then maybe down a bit on the midtones and up a bit on the contrast. Not a lot on both but just a bit will make it look sharp. A bit darker but I think it would be awesome! IMO of course
