you could crop out a little top and bottom, it wouldn't change the effect of the scenery

there is definately a fault here, and I agree with Jawsh, it looks like a focus problem. To the right of the bridge, along the top of the wall, there is a difference in wall height and focus!

I like this, althought the emphasis is more on the soldier than the weapon he is carrying

depends on what the author was trying to achieve!.............it is not always necessary to include the whole subject in order to effect the shot.
