Not only can we clearly see this monarch but we can hear the soft flutter of wings...he's that close to us. You have a very tight crop and with that crop we viewers are pulled in immediately to the image. You have some detail lost in the black , called "black clipping" or "block up", were you shooting on A or Manual mode? This was not an easy image to get right for you have a sunny day and some details lost on the red petals of flowers. Focus is good with his proboscis clearly seen and his beautiful wings have been delightfully caught by you. The colour is natural and fresh.
(5 years and 1007 days ago)Butterflies delight us carbon based bi-peds and torment us photographers. Pretty to look at and so difficult to get sharp. Your butterfly comes across as quite soft through all the planes of the image. I do not think this is camera shake but rather the focus may have been off. Some photographers want their images to appear soft at times and I'm wondering if that is what you were gunning for? I do think the composition and crop are very well done showing the environs of this pretty "flying flower" as we sometimes refer to the butterfly.
