At first i was like: why would you enter a croped image of the source, but after reading your steps i got it.
Try to find some stock with fire and buildings make a normal image and then warpe it in the reflection, cause right now we can see it's only a drawing.

If you don't know how lights & shades work on a sphere, and you don't have any 3d software to help you ( although you can download google sketch up for free, make a sphere and a tree on top and add light source)
- you can get a small ball of uniform color, a lamp, and cut out from paper the abstract shape of a tree which will be glued on the sphere. Then just adjust the position of the lamp, and take a pic for referece.
If you're not up for all this fun just download Google Sketchup.
About the colors, make something(background) blue/purple to contrast with the brown/yellow.

You should have made a window out of the doors frame, so that they won't look out of scale and half burried.
Rule of composition: repeating an element lowers it's value (2 yellow houses).

For the light thing, try cloning the shadowed paint into the light area and then add another layer - lower oppacity or set on soft light and paint with white using a soft brush.

Well it looks better cause of the shape of the girl, but in order to make it stand out more you should adjust the background with levels(ctrl L), making it darker and blur it a bit.

It's copyright free, it's already cut and would make a nice touch to the pic, chromatically and volumetrically.

Wouldn't it look better with

-larger eye-meaning opened widely (use warp);
-bacteria filling all of the eye (not only iris);
-some outer glow ( greenish) on the bacteria layer, like it casts light;
-some texture on the skin, either from an outsource or by filters, you can give it a light green tone with red thin veins for contrast.

About making a SBS: I save work as jpg from time, naming them 1, 2,3 etc, since i ussually reach over 10 and don't have patience to upload each one, i start merging them 1+2+3 = Step1, and so on.

Nice image, extending the landscape at the bottom by using those rocks from Dark falls, would create a solid foreground that complements the composition, imo. Try it and see if you like it

You could use the bouncing raindrops (light color) to create more contrast, paint them on the upper side of the plaine which should also be lighter, so that we can distinguish the form of the plain easier. I also think that cropping the image would help the composition - too much useless space right now
