You handled the source very well, and it is definitely unique! However, if you look at the right hand side of the image the texture suddenly ends in a harsh line, maybe you could crop that edge, or simply extend the texture a little further. Good luck

About making a SBS: I save work as jpg from time, naming them 1, 2,3 etc, since i ussually reach over 10 and don't have patience to upload each one, i start merging them 1+2+3 = Step1, and so on.
About entry: Good source & idea, you could improve the execution of the alien head by working on it's painting & shape more. Pen & blur.

Once again, unless you have an ancient camera, this is macro! One of various macro settings on offer! read the theme, where does it say mega close? Even the sample pix is far from close!
