Kinloss Abbey near Forres was founded in 1150 by King David I and colonised by Cistercian monks. The abbey went on to become one of the largest and wealthiest religious houses in Scotland. The Protestant Reformation of 1560 brought about the abbey's demise.

Brodie Castle near Forres was built by Clan Brodie in 1567 but partly destroyed by fire in 1645. It was greatly expanded in 1824 by the architect William Burn. In 1980 the Castle was taken into the care of the National Trust for Scotland.
