I think this would be a nice looking photo if the glares weren't there. Maybe try taking this shot again and put some type of covers over the lights to soften the glare of the lights.

aaaaaahhhhhhh RUBY...... I love rubys....

There is all so an other way instead of crop (cropping will loose the lowest part of the crystal & it would look "ugly".
Set your light metering to "spot" (so your camera gets light only from the crystal).
That way you increase the shutter speed & the background gets all black.
Lean you crystal with the following way...
Use a toothpick & 2 small pieces of your adhesive tack & place them "behind" the crystal.

Personally I would crop out the plasticine as it is a little distracting being bright green. Nice crystal though, what does it look like with a bit of light shining through from the back?

I know a few Geology geeks who would love this one! Nice find.

I think a change in direction of your light source (more to the side) would have helped to bring out the natural curves and lines of this piece though.

It's a clever idea. So what did you do? Photograph the books first and then piece pictures together on photoshop or something? It's definitely a good example of thinking outside the square.
