The right hand is much bigger than the left one and you forgot the spikes on the left shoulder, also the spikes on the left arm aren't in the same location as those on the right arm (they should be invisible or to be turned upward). Just my opinion, if this is what you design, it's OK. This work has a high potential to be on the top 3, GL

i think the place is not important but it should be consistent. In your case, different layers you put to different position and there are limited repetition

Many people has done that (for example http://chain.deviantart.com/art/Eternal-scream-66319159) and your work has a technical problem: the biggest and the second mouth look different from the rest, maybe you distorted them too much

Good idea, but the angle you choose is not good, because the second image is mostly hided by the first one, and we can't see the third repeated image. Anyhow, the repeatation should be seen at least 4 or 5 times

Good composition, harmonic colors and quite clean. I have some suggestions: between the right shoulder and the wing you need to erase the remaining part of the wing on the shouder, it can be seen in Hi-Res; the white brush for the glowing things is quite recognizable and not smooth, you can blur them a little bit; if there is the mild transparence of the water which exposeds to the land, your image will be more realistic. This is one of the better entries IMO, good luck!

Hmm, quite better but not desired to me. The shadow should be more or less like that around his neck --> \/. About his nose, it's still not realistic, you can use the bloat tool in liquify to make the center of his nose tip (whatever, I don't know how to call) to be rounder. Just find an photo and observed the real nose than you can figure it out

The best one in this contest so far. The use of source is very good. I like the composition and the colors. I have some suggestions, maybe they can help. The rainbow colors can be better if you compare it to the real one, this one is easy to be fixed, also it should be behind everything in this scenery, including the trees (do you know that without water in the air, we can't see the rainbow?). I prefer the ribbon to be softer and glowed a bit more, that would be nice. Wish you the best of luck!
