come on now! "other things" can be the white poster board you use as a background or the black fabric you use to place your subject on. I think they mean "other things" as in people, flowers, electronics, animals, plates, beer cans, etc. etc.

It should have been better if the line was not in the center of the picture. Perheps try to put it at 1/3 or 2/3 of the picture. Anyway it's interesting !
