(5 years and 948 days ago)Congrats Kompaktive!! I'm glad you followed through and entered your image here, it was well worth it! Finishing in the top three of this contest, especially with your first entry, is quite an accomplishment!

(5 years and 948 days ago)The reason you perceive a "blurry" look is because of the eye of the cricket/grasshopper. Look at steps 5 and 6 in your SBS. The eye is no longer crisp and sharp in step 6 and the highlight is too dark and soft, this affects how the observer perceives the sharpness of the image.
(5 years and 949 days ago)When you create shadows you are correct to place them on a new layer but you should set that layer on "multiply" (that makes it transparent) and use the Gaussian blur feature to adjust the sharpness. Then adjust the opacity to suit. In lightening the girl you lost all shadows making her a bit flat. She should have stronger shadows to better match the cricket/grasshopper. There's no shadow of the rope on the girl or where her skirt is over her leg.
Congrats!!

(5 years and 956 days ago)Even though another author also created a tractor style vehicle from the source it's interesting to see what the other author made in their entry. Even though the basic idea is similar each is different. Good luck to both!
(5 years and 961 days ago)I see another author also saw the source in a similar way and created a tractor style vehicle also. It's not that unusual and it's interesting to see how another author interprets their version. Even though the basic idea is similar each entry is totally different. Good luck to both!
(5 years and 961 days ago)A fun entry and a very good SBS!

(5 years and 969 days ago)The mask work isn't very clean, the background overlaps the hair, face and ear. The other edges are blurry and indistinct. It looks like you put the background over the image of Bell and erased to reveal the figure. You should have silhouetted the figure and placed the background behind him.
(5 years and 977 days ago)Nicely done, I love it!
(5 years and 979 days ago)Your source links don't work, you posted them in the wrong boxes. When posting sources place the URL (address) in the top box. The lower box marked "text" is for the description and/or credit for the source.

(5 years and 984 days ago)You really shouldn't think that way. How you perceive your own work is rarely how others see it. A good entry should inspire not intimidate you. I've seen other members (myself included) hesitate to post their entries thinking their work wasn't as good as what was already entered in a contest but when they do enter they place higher than they expected often ahead of the entry that caused them to doubt. I've been doing this a long time yet I'm still often surprised by the outcome of many contests. No matter how you place in a contest you still earn talent points and any constructive criticism will help you to learn and grow as an artist, you won't get that if you don't enter and show your efforts. Winning isn't everything but if you have a defeatists attitude you lose before you even try.
(5 years and 985 days ago)Well technically Bob is right. The link should be http://www.deviantart.com/art/Clown-3-101048932
(5 years and 986 days ago)Nice entry BTW!
This is a nice entry but the straight edge where the photo ends on the right side is a bit distracting. It's an easy fix, just take a patch from the other arm and shoulder, flip it, fit it into position then a little burn and dodge. I tried that with a copy of your entry, took five or six minutes.
(5 years and 986 days ago)Author it's fine to use your own photos but the rules require that if you're using your own images as source you have to post the original images uncut and unaltered in an SBS (Step By Step) with your entry.
(5 years and 986 days ago)Please do that a.s.a.p. or the Contest Moderator may send you a warning.
