(5 years and 2961 days ago)Let's not get argumentative here, in all fairness to langstrum his entry you mentioned is an original composition and not a copy of any one particular source. Your entry while acceptable is very close to the original image and composition and dependent on that and not a composition you originated. The decision of acceptability required some deliberation as it is very close to the source and you should accept the fact that some may not agree with that, as is their right.
(5 years and 2962 days ago)This is close to the reference image and yes it was removed in it's original form but the author made enough alterations to be acceptable. It's not unusual for an artist to be inspired by an image whether it's painted from life or based on a lovely photo as this was. The workmanship is excellent in my opinion and I do agree with IDt8r who we all know is a talented artist as well. Perhaps others would have had a different take on the image but I see this as a fine study of an elegant subject and respect how the author interpreted the subject matter.
(5 years and 2962 days ago)@Langstrum... I do appreciate your point of view and I can definitely state this was not traced, using the grid system will give you a very close approximation of the image used and I can tell the difference I promise you. As I said we all have our own ideas in what we create they wouldn't necessarily be right or wrong...just different.
There's nothing wrong with using reference as a guide which is all I suggested, it is difficult to draw those chess pieces from memory and they are most certainly more complex than the male/female icons. It was your statement that you lacked the skills that prompted me to ask.Your SBS doesn't show any steps in the liquify/warp creation of the pieces, step 4 just shows a silhouette with elliptical ridges and step 5 the lines added for detail. If you did create them without reference I'd say you do have the skills to have made the figures work contrary to your statement. Creating the pieces with liquify and warp without a base drawing seems a lot more difficult than drawing them digitally which is a more logical approach to me.
(5 years and 2962 days ago)I tend to agree with MossyB's comment, the source wasn't really needed to create this. I'm also curious about your response, you say you lack the skills to make the male/female source figures look 3D yet you say you created the chess pieces yourself with liquify and warp. The figures are a very simple form and much easier to add dimension to them than to create the complex shapes of chessmen from scratch. You don't show any source for the chessmen but they're all in correct perspective with complex details. Wonder how this is possible?
(5 years and 2962 days ago)Excellent tweaking author! Perspective looks much better and the darkening of the shadow adds more drama! The creature looks fine to me, definitely looks inside the container.
(5 years and 2964 days ago)The rendering is very nice but there is a little problem with the perspective of the cylinder. The ellipses should be a little flatter at the top and get more rounded as you go further below eye level. You can find several links with google to help, this one will show you the basic perspective: http://www.artyfactory.com/perspective_drawing/perspective_7.htm
(5 years and 2964 days ago)As I said the rendering is good, if you could tweak the perspective IMO it would make it even better.
Congrats!!

(5 years and 2968 days ago)Excellent entry and great subject. You can't say enough about the courage and determination of the British people in WWII. Using older less capable aircraft like the Hawker Hurricane and the newer and one of the ten best fighters in history the Supermarine Spitfire they fought overwhelming odds. This makes a nice tribute to those tenacious British fighter pilots!
(5 years and 2975 days ago)A very well crafted entry! Everyone has shown excellent work in this contest you're all winners in my book!
(5 years and 2977 days ago)Wonderful work, just terrific! (Yes there were windows in the command module and the L.E.M.)
