The source photo is too blue and cool in tone, while the bears are too yellowed and warm in tone. Maybe apply a cooling filter to the bears and desaturate the blues of the contest source so everything is a bit more consistent.

Good idea, but CMYK has a point. Also, I'd use the bigger version that can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Eyck_-_Arnolfini_Portrait.jpg (click on the image for bigger version), so things are better recognizable and at least it's possible to clearly see the great painting from the terrific Van Eyck! The lighting on his head is opposite the light in the original painting. The light comes from the window...you have the shadow on his face on the side where the highlight would be.

I think the hand has to be BEHIND the guy, (It looks like his arm is broken ... great humor (be careful around the chin (its a bit washed out and the background is shining through (you should be able to just duplicate the young man's layer and that should fill in the space that got erased (about two or three times)

I am trying to figure out what you have used besides the eyes.
The guy drinking the coffee already had babyface features so it is hard to pick up the differences without an sbs or high res.
