Before you begin painting on a model, consider the type of texture map you want to paint (diffuse/color, bump, gloss, reflection), the resolution/size of the image you want to produce, and finally the bit depth for the image.
Consider the following items before exporting a model from a 3D modeling application and painting it in Mudbox. The first three requirements are the most critical.
The paint feature lets you apply digital paint to your high resolution 3D models in Mudbox. You simply select a paint brush, create a layer to paint on, and begin painting on your model in the 3D View.
You can sculpt your models using displacement maps using the Sculpt Model Using Displacement Map feature. Using this feature, you can do "magic". Let's take a closer look...
Stamps work in combination with the sculpting and paint tools to let you mask the tip of your tool with an image and apply interesting sculpted detail effects and features to a model.

Curves can be used to create controlled strokes when you sculpt on a model by acting as two-dimensional guides for your sculpt and paint strokes.
This Mudbox tutorial will show you how to use curves guides.
The Freeze tool locks affected vertices on a model so they cannot be modified while you sculpt. You can freeze vertices on both the base subdivision level and on sculpt layers. By default, the affected faces appear blue whenever they are frozen.
