Today we will create a vector drawing of the main character from the Chinese novel “Journey to the Westâ€, the Monkey King. The tutorial will show you drawing techniques for Illustrator,tips for character design and composition setups. Whether you’re an advanced Illustrator user or a beginner, you’ll be able to complete it easily.
The mechanical, geometric nature of the robot character featured in this tutorial lends itself to vector artwork — Astute Graphics’ tools really help speed up your workflow in projects like this. Most of this tutorial will use the InkScribe Tool (part of the DrawScribe plugin for Adobe Illustrator) as well as some features from VectorScribe’s range of tools.
Traditionally, to create a handmade icon graphic you would need paints and brushes. We will only need a graphic tablet, Illustrator and the DrawScribe plugin. For quick recoloring of a completed icon, we’ll also make use of the Phantasm CS plugin.
