Let’s tap into some of the 3D features of Adobe Illustrator. Though Illustrator doesn’t offer a 3D environment like a true 3D application, it does give you the ability to create 3D objects that can be modified within a 3D space. Texture mapping and light sources similar to those found in the high-end 3D applications are also available.

Perhaps one of the most underutilized features in Illustrator is Live Trace, which can convert any photograph into vector art in just a few clicks. In this tutorial, we’re going to use Live Trace to vectorize a photo for a logo design. You can create three-dimensional effects in Adobe Illustrator using a few simple shapes. Scale a one-dimensional object and then add a bottom, sides, and shading to give it a three-dimensional look. The Illustrator Smart Guides and Pathfinder palette help you draw the object accurately.
