Last time we shared a cre­ative way to use para­graph rules in InDe­sign to make head­ers stand out; we looked at how to use them to put a block of color behind the words. This time, we were going to show you how to use both a Rule Above and Rule Below to cre­ate an effect, but when we were exam­in­ing a few options, we real­ized that there was a much eas­ier way to cre­ate the effect with­out using two rules.

Normally when you’re setting your paragraph styles you must specify a font size. If you want to shrink your entire layout by 20%, you have to go to each style and manually alter it. I don’t know about you, but that seems like way more work that it needs to be.

In the footer, outer margin or header in books and brochures you often find a title repeated on each page - depending on who you ask these are called running titles or running headers/footers. If you know how to master the master pages in InDesign, you won't have any troubles with adding a title that is automatically added to all pages, but learning InDesign's text variable options and the different text markers are essential to make a running title, and changing the content depending on the page it is shown on.
