Symmetry tools offer a way to speed up the sculpting process by reflecting detail sculpted on one side of a model onto the other side.

Mudbox's 3D Layers behave much like 2D layer systems of mainstream image editors such as Photoshop®. When sculpting on a layer, Mudbox calculates the difference between the positions of vertices after a brush stroke and their original positions on the "base" mesh.
Let's see exactly how this works!

Layers let you sculpt on one region of the mesh without affecting other areas. A layer in Mudbox is like a transparent piece of acetate that contains any sculpting you perform while it is active.

Hardware limitations will always bound the number of polys that can be displayed and manipulated at once. Mudbox offers a way to work within these limitations through "local subdivision".

Stencils work in combination with the Sculpting Tools and let you use images to apply interesting sculpted details and features to a mesh.

The Value Paint tools let you modify properties of the vertices on the mesh (the points defining the shape of the model). For example, vertices can store other information such as color in addition to the positional information (X, Y, Z) they store when sculpting...
Let's learn moire about them, shall we?

You sculpt using sculpting brushes. You select sculpting brushes from the Tool Trays located at the bottom of the 3D view. Read on to find out more about the Mudbox's tools.

Mudbox can display polygon meshes in the 3D View. Let's take a look at how that works.

Materials are a collection of properties assigned to a mesh that control how the surface of the mesh reacts to light and appears in the 3D View when rendered in shaded mode within Mudbox.

Lights illuminate the objects in your scene and help you accurately evaluate the form of your sculpted mesh. You can modify the brightness (intensity) and color properties (diffuse and specular) for a light. A default light always exists for the 3D View in Mudbox, but additional lights can be created.
